Toddler Safety Tips

Toddler safety can never be taken for granted. Child proofing your home inside and out will provide you peace of mind. Child proofing is no substitute for adult supervision but it just makes sense not to leave danger lying in the path of your children’s curiosity. The easiest way to insure your toddlers’ well being is to stay one step ahead of them. In the blink of an eye, they can pull a hot pan of water off the stove. Turn your head and they are underneath the sink exploring. Toddler safety amounts to preparing your home properly.

Perhaps taking room by room and indentifying the dangers in your home to a toddler would be the quickest way to assess the environment. The kitchen may be the room that can hold the most danger. Make certain all matches and lighters are put away in secure drawers. Safety latches should be installed on each and every cabinet.  The most important is where cleaning supplies are stored. Magnets on the fridge are not a good idea at this time. Little ones are always looking for something small to place in their mouths. Your toddler safety issues will include this habit time and time again.

Move all glass items to the back of the fridge. Back burners on your stove should be used first. Turn handles inward so they do not hang off from the stove’s edge. Check all electrical cords to make certain that they are not reachable to little hands. Always be aware of where your hot drinks are at all times. Be certain that they are not within your toddlers’ reach. Do not leave plastic bags of any kind out. These should be disposed of immediately. Consider placing baby gates leading into the kitchen to insure toddler safety.

In your toddler’s bedroom, be sure you are using a safe crib. The fitted sheet needs to be snug and secure. No more than two fingers should fit between the frame of the crib and the mattress. Do not place the crib underneath a window. If there is no choice, then be sure this window locks. There are reported cases of toddlers climbing through windows. There is no need to have drapery or any sort of cord in the area of the crib. Remove this and you have omitted a way toddlers can strangle. Toddler safety is quite graphic at times.

There is never a reason for a toddler to be unattended in the bathroom. As you prepare to bathe your toddler, always check the water temperature before placing the child in the water. Medicine cabinets and storage areas should always be secured with a safety latch. Do not keep buckets in the bathroom or containers with fluid in them. Toddlers can fall into a pail head first and not be able to get out. Your toddler safety plan should always be evolving and thinking ahead.
