Infertility Treatment
When couples are trying to conceive, and can’t seem to do so, they may opt for infertility treatment. This is not something to enter into lightly, as it is usually quite expensive and there is no guarantee of success. Most health insurance policies will not cover this sort of treatment either. The couple needs to be sure they have all the information up front before committing to any method of treatment.
Your problems will determine the type of treatment you will be offered. Women 35 or over may be offered something different as in skipping over some of the steps with infertility treatment that younger women will go through. This is due to the fact that as women get older, their chances of getting pregnant decrease.
If you have ovulation problems, there are certain drugs that a specialist may recommend to you. These drugs are meant to stimulate your ovaries and lessen the chance for a pregnancy of more than one baby. The drugs may not always work. When this happens, usually hormone shots are next on the agenda. This infertility treatment produces some mild to moderate side effects, and increases the chances of having multiple babies at once.
If your doctor cannot discover the cause of the infertility, and none of the procedures work, the next avenue may be in vetro fertilization or IVF. This is the process of mixing the man’s sperm with the woman’s eggs together in a lab setting. If needed, sperm or eggs can come from donors. Fertilization occurs when the egg and sperm join. Once this happens, the doctor can put one or more of these fertilized eggs, or embryos, into your uterus where it can grow. In this infertility treatment, more than one embryo is usually place in the uterus to increase the chances for one of them to become a baby.
IVF is the most serious, and last resort, for couples experiencing infertility problems. It is a very expensive procedure, and people with normal incomes usually cannot afford more than a one shot deal. If the treatment doesn’t work, there are possibly 2 other options. One of these is by entering into an agreement with a surrogate. This is less of an infertility treatment than it is a solution. The surrogate works when the infertility problem is with the woman, in that she either cannot conceive or she cannot carry the baby to term. The man’s sperm is still used. In the case of the woman being unable to carry a baby to term, her eggs can still be used.
While being unable to conceive a baby can be very heartbreaking to a lot of couples, you should know that there are options for you to try. Even if none of those work, you can still consider adopting one of the many unwanted children in the world, and create your family that way.
