Gender Selection Conception

When most couples decide they want to have a baby, their top priority is to make sure they produce a healthy, happy baby, but there are those who want to know more about gender selection conception. These are the couples who desperately want to conceive a certain sex. While there are no guarantees that any of the methods for this will actually work, there are enough success stories that make it a worthwhile endeavor for couples who want more control over the sex of their babies.

One of the most well known methods of gender selection conception was developed by Dr. Landrum B. Shettles in the 1960’s. He co-authored a book that was published in 1971 on the subject entitled How to Choose the Sex of Your Baby. He had done exhaustive research into the subject of how couples might pre-determine the sex of the baby they are trying to conceive. This book enjoyed a significant amount of success.

According to Dr. Shettles, the most important thing when it comes to controlling what the gender of your baby will be is timing. This is especially true if you are using gender selection conception to ensure yourselves of a boy. By having intercourse as close as possible to ovulation, you increase your chances of having a boy. This is due to these being the faster of the two sperm types, and are most likely to reach the egg first. To conceive your son, intercourse should happen during the times of peak fertile mucus, but not more than 12 hours prior to ovulation. By charting your ovulation and noticing a temperature drop, you should have intercourse then or the next morning.

If you wish to use gender selection conception to create a girl, you should have intercourse 2 – 4 days before you ovulate. The female sperm survive much longer than the male sperm, and allows more of the female sperm to reach the egg. Do not have intercourse during your peak fertile mucus times. The Shettles method has been a bit less successful in conceiving girls. So if it is that important to you that you have a daughter, you might want to consider other methods.

In using gender selection conception, if you are trying for a boy, you should avoid intercourse for 4 – 5 days before ovulation. If you do have intercourse earlier than that, be sure to use a condom. If you want to conceive a girl, daily intercourse is recommended starting at the end of your period until 2 – 4 days before you ovulate. For 2 – 3 days following ovulation, you should refrain from intercourse, or use condoms.

There are other factors involved in gender selection conception, such as sexual positions and whether or not women need to reach an orgasm. Men can do their part by making sure their scrotal temperature is cooler. This can be accomplished by wearing boxers rather than briefs. He may also indulge in a few cups of hot coffee before intercourse to help the chances for a boy.

The Shettles Method may or may not work for you. If you have questions as to what may help you achieve success in conceiving the boy or girl that you want, your doctor is the one to consult.
